Exhibition Statement

“Well Being: Rituals for a Sacred Life is the first solo presentation of artwork by ceramicist Angelique Scott. The exhibition presents over thirty ceramic pieces that encourage personal reflection, collective meditation, and communion. The vessels act as portals transporting the viewer to sacred space for solace and rest.

Investigating the mind-body-soul connection, interconnectedness, and community healing, Scott’s ceramic works serve as contemporary tools that facilitate restorative practices such as meditation, aromatherapy, and the recitation of affirmations. Working in clay, fiber, metal, and beads, Black cultural objects such as bamboo earrings, cowrie shells, and braided patterns present reoccurring iconography specific to the artist’s background. Scott’s bead and shell adorned pieces serve as a metaphor for vessel and source, themes central to her exploration of the relationship between the human figure and life - source.

Well Being: Rituals for a Sacred Life features carefully curated spaces within the gallery, such as a velvet cup shelf with hand-crafted tea cups, libation pitchers, and herbal vessels that reference Pan-African veneration traditions, seated meditation using hand-dyed and stitched indigo mats, and a hand-pressed ceramic tile mirror for self-reflection paired with affirmations.”
