Lady Justice

The Lady Justice is an metaphorical personification created to symbolize equality and fairness in the judicial system. Often times black people, people of color, poor people and other marginalized communities are wrongfully arrested, convicted, and imprisoned; failed by the American justice system. This rendition of "Lady Justice" kneels on her pedestal, her blindfold representing impartiality begins to fall off, as she injures her hand holding the unbalanced scales (not pictured) using her own sword of reason. The mule in the background references the "40 acres and a mule" promise to give newly freed enslaved people land during the American Civil War.
